What is
whey protein?

Whey is extracted from the watery portion of milk (known as the whey) that forms during the cheese-making process. In the 1960s, with more sophisticated techniques, it became possible to separate proteins and sugars from the whey. Today, many infant formulas, baked goods, yogurts, cheeses, ice creams, and functional foods are enriched with whey protein to improve their nutritional value.

What is the difference between the various whey proteins?

Whey protein can come in three different forms based on its degree of filtration and protein breakdown. The more filtered the whey, the higher the protein concentration. The smaller the protein molecule, the more efficiently it is absorbed and utilized by the body.

Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC)

was the first to be developed. It contains 30% to 80% protein, with the remainder composed of casein, fat and lactose. People with an allergy or restrictions to any of these components should avoid it as it can cause allergic reactions and abdominal discomfort.

Whey Protein Isolate (WPI)

was developed using different filtration techniques to yield a product with more than 90% whey protein "isolated" from undesirable elements such as casein, fat and lactose. WPI offers the purest and best quality protein that is quickly absorbed while maintaining a favorable taste.

Hydrolyzed Whey Protein (HWP)

undergoes further breakdown (hydrolysis) to facilitate digestion and to increase its bioavailability in the body. WPH has smaller protein particles (called peptides) and is absorbed even faster than WPI. In addition, there is a reduced possibility of allergic reactions.

What is CFM®
whey protein?

CFM® stands for cross-flow microfiltration.

CFM® is a natural, non-chemical process that uses proprietary membrane techniques to create a highly pure, nutritionally superior and undenatured whey protein isolate.

This yields a high purity protein, making for better absorption and digestibility, without the use of chemicals†

  • Gentle filtration system
  • Low temperature
  • Filters separate protein from fat, cholesterol and sugar
  • High purity protein

CFM® is a registered trademarks of Glanbia plc.
